Album: Blood Rock n Roll & Black Angels

Review: Finally! KAPTAIN SUN are back to hammer their next bolt of Death’n’Roll, “Blood, Rock’n’Roll & Black Angels” into our skulls. The debut “Rainbowride” was already able to convince me of this band, and thus I was anxious to see how this unit, which makes music that is somewhere in between SPIRITUAL BEGGARS, ZAKK WYLDE and the rocking albums of ENTOMBED, would go on.

Now I have the answer in the form of the new album, and I have to say that the band are able to keep their level, though they have changed stylistically. After the first spin, you notice that the melodies that made “Rainbowride” so good take a back-seat and that the heaviness was increased. Consequently, the tunes are not as catchy anymore as they were on the debut. You need several additional spins to get into pearls such as “Starmaster”, “Evil Demon” or the title track anyway. Of course, the groove that could be found on “Rainbowride” is the band’s trademark again on “Blood…”. This time the Swedes vary the tempo more, though, so that “Self Destruction” or “Psychotwins”, for example, almost sound a bit Thrash Metal-like. Reminds me of KAYSER. What I think is especially well-done are the still very neat and melodic guitar solos by Andreas Svensson and Andy Wong as well as the latter’s harsh, raw throat. The man simply suits this music perfectly, as he comes across as really mangy. This also goes for the sound. Compared to the debut, it was improved, but as I said it sounds very raw and brutal. The guitars shred heavily and the bass audible very well, too, which is rather rare nowadays. The producer did a good job and refined this riff monster in a suitable fashion, anyway.

Well, for me it is hard to decide if I prefer "Blood...“ or “Rainbowride”. “Blood…” has a better production, it is heavier and more varied than the debut. Yet I somewhat miss the catchiness and the magic melodies that made songs such as “Invisible Dragons” or “Lovedemon” so cool. That is why I rate “Blood…” half a point lower than the debut. All of the nine songs are great, but I miss a true ear-candy. Nevertheless, KAPTAIN SUN get one step closer to their competitors again, and I think that they will do another step on the scale of popularity. Fans of the above-mentioned bands should get this and purchase the debut as well. KAPTAIN SUN sock as hell, that is for sure, and you should finally convince yourselves of this fact yourselves.
